On the last page of the story Oedipus the King, Creon says to Oedipus, "Stop this striving to be master of all. The mastery yo had in life has been your fall." (80)
I believe this quote is a strong indicator that Oedipus was his own cause of his downfall. As we see here at the end of the play, Creon is still asking Oedipus to stop trying to control the world around him and his fate. This clearly shows that Oedipus has not learned his lesson even though he has brought some much misery on himself and those around him through his trying to control his fate.
